10 Harsh Truths I Wish I Knew In My 20s
Are your twenties for partying? Or do your twenties lay the foundation for the rest of your life? These are ten life lessons I wish I had known in my 20s.
When you are in your twenties, learning about the world and discovering your obsession is critical. It is also a time to face the realities of the world. These are ten harsh truths I wish I knew in my 20s.
No One Is Coming To Save You
It is essential to understand that no one can save you from your problems. No external force can resolve all your issues, whether it is a politician, institution, guru, influencer, or significant other. People often look to political leaders to solve their country's problems, but that is not a realistic expectation. It is crucial to realize that no one thing will resolve your issues. No relationship, accomplishment, or external force will ever fix your problems.
When I was younger, I pursued a degree in political science, believing that politics could solve people's problems. However, as I grew older, I realized that politics often creates polarization and division, and some people place their identity in it.
It is up to you to take responsibility for your life and fix your problems. You need to practice self-discipline and self-responsibility and set achievable goals to achieve this. Remember, you are the only one who can take control of your life and create a better future for yourself.
Respect Is Earned
Respect is not a given but an earned privilege. It is not about the title you hold but about the choices you make each day. Your character speaks volumes and defines how you conduct yourself. Whether you have earned respect or not, it reflects on you and not on others. So make wise choices and become the person you want to respect.
Failure Is Never Trying
Failure is not achieving the desired result but not attempting it. The fear of failure can hold you back from taking risks that can teach you valuable life lessons, help you develop new skills, and make more money.
Success and failure are often vague and exist only in your mind before you start working on something. They are contingent upon you never starting or finishing a project.
The only actual failure is never taking action. Always making excuses and procrastinating prevent you from achieving your goals. Failure is a natural part of the process; you can learn from failure to improve next time.
Relationships Reflect You
Your relationships reveal a profound truth about you, reflecting your relationship with yourself. How you treat others mirrors the way you treat yourself. If you treat people poorly, you disrespect yourself. Conversely, you will only accept relationships that meet your standards and self-respect.
Remember, how you interact with others is a testament to your character. By holding yourself to a high standard of respect and dignity, you can attract the kind of relationships that reflect positively on you.
Be The Spouse You Want
Your significant other or spouse is a reflection of you.
If you desire a partner who is fit and healthy, you must also embody those characteristics.
Similarly, if you seek a trustworthy and loyal spouse, you must display those traits.
If you aspire to be in a relationship with a successful person, you must first achieve success.
It is essential to reflect on whether you would date yourself, and if not, consider that it is your responsibility to work on the areas where you need to improve.
Life’s Most Essential Habits Compound
The most essential habits in life are those that grow over time. These habits affect your relationships, self-confidence, learning, wealth, and health.
You can make good and bad life decisions. If you cultivate bad habits, they will compound and lead to a downward spiral. On the other hand, good habits will compound and help you achieve success.
It's natural to feel frustrated that these things take time to develop in your 20s. However, it is crucial to start nurturing them as a young adult.
Never stop learning, building confidence, prioritizing relationships, improving your health, and finding ways to increase your income to build wealth.
If you focus on developing and nurturing these good habits, they will compound and grow in your 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond.
Life’s Most Exciting Activities Have The Highest Rate Of Diminishing Returns
The most thrilling, exhilarating, and enjoyable activities lose their charm with time. These activities often divert your attention and consume valuable time and energy, especially in your twenties. Examples of activities that offer diminishing returns over time are social media usage, video gaming, casual hookups, alcohol and drug consumption, frequent vacations, and partying.
The first time you indulge in an activity, it is an unforgettable experience. The next time, it still feels good. However, enjoyment rapidly declines after the third time. You have experienced it enough that you are now indifferent to it.
Never Turning Down New Opportunities
Do you ever have to turn down opportunities you would love to do? If you have never experienced turning down opportunities, it indicates that you lack focus. Stop wasting your time, attention, and energy on things that do not matter. Instead, discover your obsession and dedicate yourself to it.
The best way to find your obsession is to discover your strengths, skills, and the problem you want to solve. Once you know what you obsess over, focus on mastering it. Imagine having so many options and opportunities flooding your inbox and messages that it is impossible to respond to all of them. When that happens to you, it is a sign that pursuing your obsession helped you to find your life purpose.
People and opportunities actively seek you out because you have become the best in your field, niche, or skill set, which is a sign of true success and achievement.
Power Is Given To Who You Blame
Blaming others for your problems gives them power over you. When you play the victim, you allow them to define you and control your happiness.
Being a victim is pointless. It does not affect those you blame. It only leads to anger and bitterness.
The key is to practice self-responsibility and take charge of your life. Self-responsibility reclaims your power and allows you to create a better future.
Accept Responsibility For Everything
Taking responsibility for your actions is the key to personal growth and empowerment. It is time to stop blaming others for your problems and start accepting self-responsibility. By acknowledging your past mistakes and accepting them as your own, you can free yourself from guilt and fear.
Practicing self-responsibility can be life-changing. You become the captain of your own ship, with the power to steer your life in any direction. You become more resilient and better equipped to handle challenges by owning your successes and failures.
The more responsibility you assume, the more control you have over your life. Self-responsibility is the foundation of personal power and the key to finding solutions to any problem.
So, take charge of your life, embrace self-responsibility, and unlock your full potential.
