Death Of The 9-5 Job: Rise Of The Solopreneur
The 9-5 job is dying. Part-time jobs and the gig economy are replacing traditional jobs. Being a solopreneur is a way for people to escape working in the gig economy and create passive income.
In the 20th century, the way to success was by going to college, being loyal to a company, working your way up, and then you could enjoy retirement with a pension or other type of traditional retirement account. With some exceptions, the old way of the nine-to-five is dying off.
Go To College To Get A Degree
“Every year, many, many stupid people graduate from college. And if they can do it, so can you.” - John Green
The path to success in the 20th century required people to get a degree. Fewer people went to college than today. The problem today is that almost everyone has a degree today. The market has become over-saturated with college degrees. Graduate school is next to become saturated as people continue to believe that going into debt for higher education will help them have a better future.
Young people are told that college is a requirement for success. High school counselors and parents encourage young people to go to college. The problem is young people just out of high school do not know themselves, let alone their skills.
I know I did not. I initially thought I wanted to be a lawyer. I later thought I wanted to go into cybersecurity. I would not have been good at either of those things. I am now on my to becoming a self-published author. My first book is currently on sale for $0.99 for the Kindle. If I can self-publish a book, so can others.
The modern education system and higher education system prepare students to become employees. It indoctrinates students into groupthink. It encourages students to go along with the current thing. The educational industrial complex no longer teaches students critical thinking or life skills.
They are then expected to choose a degree or profession from high school. They then go into debt to receive a fancy piece of paper they may never use. The system does not even make sense.
Employers made having a college degree a requirement to get many jobs rather than emphasizing if someone had the right skills.

Get A Job With Full Pay Then You Will Be OK
“You get a good job with more pay, and you're okay.” - Pink Floyd, “Money” (Dark Side of the Moon)
After graduating from college, the system makes them believe they can find a good-paying job. They can then live a comfortable life. They simply need to show up. Clock in. Do the work. Clock out. The reality is that that is no longer how the modern workplace operates.
They can then get a good-paying job. Except for STEM degrees and STEM careers, this no longer seems to be the case. The problem is that students are still required to go into debt. They will then have to pay off the debt from college to medical school to law school. Even if a person can get a good-paying job in today’s economy, it will be done to pay off their student debt.
The problem is that many good-paying jobs have become more challenging to get a job with benefits. More employers are moving to independent contractors. Reasons why more employers are moving to hiring contractors instead of full-time employees are:
Hire the most skilled person for a job.
It gives a business more flexibility.
It saves a company. time.
It saves a business money.
“Job security” has now mostly become a myth.
