Grifting
Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines grifting as “to obtain (money or property) illicitly (as in a confidence game).”
When appropriately used, grifting means someone who may run a scam, a Ponzi scheme, social or political influence, or use other methods to acquire money dishonestly.
The problem is that the word has lost its meaning. You can go to the comment section of almost any financial or business video on YouTube or a large website and see comments saying the person is “grifting.” Grifting today means that you may promote an affiliate program, promote your book, or do a basic business strategy. Yet, you may be labeled a “grifter” just because you are selling something.
If a business person, influencer, or YouTube personality is doing something honestly, whether an affiliate program or selling a digital course, they are not grifting. Yet, they may receive this label because people do not understand that asking someone to take action is just part of business. Especially an online business, which is more abstract and relatively newer given the advent of the Dotcom boom, and the growth of websites and social media.
