The cost of college can be prohibitive. It will only continue to get more expensive. You may not even be able to get a return on your investment for going to college. You want to pick a profession or career field that will pay you back if you decide to go to college. According to Education Data Initiative, these are some of the following numbers for the cost of college in 2022. The total cost for a degree for 2022 ranges from $31,000 for two years in-state to as high as $200,000 for a degree from a four-year non-profit university. The cost of room and board ranges from $7,000 to $12,000 per academic year at a university. The cost of books and supplies is $1,000 to $1,500 per year, depending on the course type and additional materials that the professors and schools require. The average student will borrow more than $30,000 to attend college. The average student loan debt is $37,667.
You will also need to calculate the cost of living, which will be how much you will spend on food, going out to eat, going to bars, spending time with your friends, and going to events each year while in college. And we haven’t even talked about transportation? You will then need to calculate that for the total four-year cost of college.
My Story
I originally wanted to be a patent lawyer, so I got a bachelor’s degree in political science four years. I then went to graduate school for cybersecurity for three years. I applied to cybersecurity jobs for over a year after graduating. Despite going to grad school, employers told me I didn’t have the right work experience. The education system lied to me. They just wanted my tuition money.
The Education Data Initiative writes that after the cost of everything, “considering student loan interest and loss of income, the ultimate cost of a bachelor's degree can exceed $500,000.”
You may want to reconsider if college is worth going into debt for or if you would instead want to find ways to make income starting now. You can begin to learn about ways to make passive income today. You will never learn about how to make or manage money in college. The last person you want to learn from is a professor.
