Why You Must Set Goals, Plan Strategy, And Apply Resources To Succeed
These are the three things that lead to success. If you only have vague dreams, you will remain stuck where you are.
Do you ever wonder why successful people are where they are at? How did they do it? Was it luck or a combination of working hard and smart? The reason why many are where they are is a result of following this three-step process: Set goals. Plan strategy. Apply resources.
Why Is This Important To Know?
If you do not understand why people get to where they are, you will think they only got there by luck. You will then think that you have no chance of being able to reach success. Goals can help you to build self-confidence.
Many people think dreams and goals are the same (even Grammarly thinks so). I used to believe this too.
My Story
Entrepreneur, writer, blogger, and content creator were never presented to me as options.
I used to think that dreams and goals were the same. I felt that what I was taught in college would be helpful and help me get a “career.” My original dream was to be a patent lawyer. It was a desire, but it was nothing more than that. I never took any action to achieve it.
I would not have been a good lawyer for numerous reasons. The biggest issue was my speech. I only thought I had a range of options because society wants to place people into boxes with careers: doctor, lawyer, politician, et cetera. Those are what college majors do. The higher education system did not help to advance my professional career.
I now write posts about it to present an alternative view that everyone must attend college. I was going along and allowing my changing desires to control me, which is not a good way to go about life. I had allowed others to tell me what my dreams should be rather than learning about myself and making and working to reach my goals.
Now, below are the differences between dreams and goals.
What Are Dreams?
Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines a dream as “A strongly desired goal or purpose.” This is also the fourth definition in the dictionary.
Dreams are things you would like or hope for, but you don’t take any action. You may think having a house by the beach or finding ways to make more money would be nice, but you continue to daydream about it. It is something you desire. But at the end of the day, it is only a wish.
People with dreams don’t get anywhere in life because they remain stagnant. They have accepted that they can’t live the lifestyle they want. They may long for something but don’t act to get what they want.
Society says there is one path to success: go to college, then get a career. Society sells you a false dream. There is no one path to success, especially today with the Internet.
Dreams remain in your head. Goals require you to act.
Set Goals
Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines a goal as “The end toward which effort is directed.” This is the first definition in the dictionary. You desire or wish for a goal to happen. That is the antithesis of goal-setting.
The first step to success is to set goals. Goals require effort. You must self-direct yourself to achieve goals.
If you do not have any plans, you need to make some. Without goals, you will remain where you are. There is always room for self-improvement. It is up to you to decide how ambitious you want your goals to be. You can start small and make your goals bigger goals. The more goals that you achieve, the more confident you will become. This will begin to create a positive feedback loop for you.
You can break goals down into three main types:
Short-term (a day to six months).
Medium-term (six months to two years).
Long-term (Two years to ten years).
You can have a combination of goals that you work on at the same point. This is how you can be efficient with your plans and projects. If you know that some projects will build off each other, you can simultaneously work on a short-term and medium-term goals. This will save you time, and you will get more done and discover that you are completing more of your goals faster.
Once you have set goals, you must plan a strategy.
Plan Strategy
It would help if you devised a plan to accomplish a specific goal. If you have no plan, you have not thought through the steps to succeed. To create or achieve a goal, you need to know the requirements to complete it. It could be as simple as writing a blog post or posting a video on YouTube. You won't do what you must do if you don’t know what you must do. You can break your plan down into smaller bits.
For example, to write a post, I must set aside time to do some research (depending on the post type), write the article, edit the article, and create any image to include in the article and as the post’s thumbnail. I then need to schedule the post.
I can also strategize my posts to create content that will work for future books. This will help me plan my content to be more efficient. I can then turn out books that will create another income stream for me faster by simultaneously working on achieving a small and significant goal.
Apply Resources
You must then figure out what resources will help you to succeed. Your resources include finances, time, attention, social networks, connections, skills, and knowledge. You may use one or more of these resources to help you reach a specific goal.
Once you have built up resources, you can reinvest them to help you achieve larger goals. You can also reinvest your financial resources to continue to build up your net worth.
SET GOALS. PLAN STRATEGY. APPLY RESOURCES.

Stop daydreaming and learn to set goals, plan strategy, and apply your resources. You can use the success loop in your daily life. Stop allowing yourself to accept mediocrity and become exceptional. Society wants you to remain where you are because you are easier to control.
