The Power Of Self: Unlocking Your True Potential
Why do many people lack self-confidence today? Why are people losing trust in society's institutions? Why not work to unlock your true potential and invest in yourself?
It seems people have lost their sense of calm, peace, respect, and sense of oneself. The focus is more on wanting to be like other people, having the latest gadget, or on some external distraction. A sense of oneself can help you know yourself and guide you to a more fulfilling life.
Loss Of The Sense Of Self
People have lost self-confidence today. People are not encouraged to learn about and understand themselves. People have been told to go to college and find a nine-to-five job. People have been taught that there is one way to success: attend college, interview for jobs, get a job at a company, stay with the company, and plan for retirement.
The loss of knowing oneself has created a generation of people without a sense of self. Groupthink is encouraged. Listening to people in “authority” without question is expected.
The result of obeying “authority” is what is seen today. People have been taught to respect academics, politicians, media personalities, the education system, and big business without question. The hive mind has gotten society to where we are today.
People have been told that the system has their best interests in mind. People now wonder why they are angry and unsatisfied with life. The consequence of following the crowd is losing one’s sense of self. Contrary to what society tells people, self-interest is natural.
Many people have been told that it is best to look up and listen to people in positions of “authority” or who are “experts” instead of spending time in introspection. The consequences of the former have created an unhappy, dissatisfied, and cynical generation that lacks self-confidence and continues to fall behind. As they fall further behind, they become more distraught, angry, and working to find a way to survive by the very people they were told to “trust.”
Why would anyone trust institutions that failed to prepare them for life at best and, at worst, lied to them? The loss of confidence in society’s institutions is well deserved.
A growing problem for society will be angry single men who have no hope for a future. They feel they have been left behind because they are poorer due to the cost of living crisis. They cannot afford a home. They will likely never be able to marry or start a family. Why should they continue doing what they were told, which got them nowhere?
This may be a reason for the rise of riots and protests. Global protests are becoming more common. Many people have lost their sense of purpose. They did what they were told to do, which had poor results. The people in “authority” then gaslight them without taking responsibility for what they told people to do. It is not surprising that people continue to distrust society’s institutions.

A lack of purpose has led to younger generations who embrace nihilism and a victim mindset. Many have been taught that it is best to ignore self-interest. They are told self-interest is evil. Self-interest is a way for someone to discover one’s purpose in life.
Nihilism fights against people searching for purpose and meaning in one’s life. There is no reason to live. There is nothing to look forward to. There is no way to find a way to get ahead. Nihilism leads to a victim mindset where a person blames one’s circumstances on external things, from other people to institutions.
Centralized solutions eventually lead to a single point of failure. Complex systems naturally fail. The 20th century was built on trust in centralized institutions. The 21st century is moving to decentralized solutions.
Unlocking Your True Potential
While society and institutions want to control and keep you down, you can learn to unlock your true potential. Self-confidence is critical to being able to unlock one’s full potential. Without confidence, fear and excuses rule one’s life.
Self-confidence plays a vital role in having a sense of self. If you doubt yourself, people will doubt you. If you are confident, people naturally want to spend time with you. People are naturally drawn to confidence. Self-confidence plays a critical role in success.
Self-confidence is attractive. Financial and other forms of success help to develop self-confidence. Self-confidence can be developed by proving that you can do what you thought you could not do.
It could be regularly going to the gym to lose weight and build muscle. It could be looking for ways to increase your income. It could be improving soft skills. It could be taking an online course to hone skills further.
A Rough Guide To Finding One’s Purpose
To do that, a person must first know themselves. You can learn:
Discover a need in the world/problem that you care about.
What you love to do. Your interests. What you are passionate about.
Your natural strengths, skills, and what you are good at.
You can find a way to monetize your skills and interests.
Understand your motivations. Spend time in solitude. Someone may have to try to discover one’s natural skillset. A person can then decide how to go about monetizing one’ strengths.
It is then up to you to figure out the best way to make money from and profit from your skills. Some options include:
Work a regular job (this is a good option until you make enough money to do your own thing).
Start a side hustle (which could later become a business).
Start a traditional or an online business.
You always want to make sure that you play to your strengths. I do not work well in medium to large groups. I would not be a good fit in a traditional corporate job because I lack soft skills, non-verbal communication skills, and people sometimes have difficulty understanding me. I work best by myself. You may be different, but just because you may do alright at a traditional job does not mean you must always be there. You could work to build your own online business.
They are embracing more decentralized solutions. Social media. Podcasts. Youtube channels. TikTok. Subtack. You can start your own website. These things go against the centralized institutions like the mainstream media, radio, and newspapers.
How can you develop self-confidence? How can you unlock your true potential? Why are people losing confidence in institutions?
